CONTEXT

#EUBeachCleanup is a global awareness campaign driven by the European Union and intended to stimulate ocean activism on the ground, through concrete actions in favour of protecting our oceans. Under the motto “Together to protect marine life”, it is in line with the 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, to be held in October.

The European Union has joined forces with #ActNow, the United Nations campaign for individual action on climate change and sustainability.

The EU-UN partnership stems from the recognition of the disastrous effect that plastic and other materials have on marine life. Plastics represent 80% of marine waste worldwide.

September 18 is International Coastal Clean-up Day, celebrated with the mobilisation of thousands of volunteers in coastal clean-up actions in over 100 countries.
