Africa-Press – Mozambique. Unidentified individuals are poisoning rivers within a buffer zone of the Niassa Special Reserve in order to catch fish.
The practice is widespread in the administrative post of Marangira, in Marrupa district, an area with great potential for hunting and tourism, said the head of the Marangira administrative post, Agostinho Saize.
“When tourists come here, they find the water poisoned,” he said.
As well as decimating river species and potentially reducing tourism in the reserve, the poachers’ actions threaten public health, as fish and water are used to satisfy the needs of the local population.
The hydrographic network in Marrupa district comprises numerous rivers and swamps, concentrated around the Lugenda river, which borders the districts of Mavago to the north, and the Messalo river, which crosses the district in the south.
