Africa-Press – Mozambique. Five fake Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) workers have been detained by the police for supplying stolen energy to about 20,000 people in Maputo province, the state-owned utility has announced.

The director of EDM at the Administrative Post of Infulene, Samuel Guambe, told public broadcaster Radio Mozambique that the detainees set up clandestine electricity supply networks, signed false contracts and, wearing EDM uniforms, carried out inspections in the homes of customers.

Energy stolen from the infrastructure of the state electricity company then arrived at the homes of the scheme’s customers, said Guambe.

The fake EDM technicians charged between 3,500 meticais (€51) and 20,000 meticais (€293) for the energy supply, he added, and even blackmailed legitimate EDM customers for alleged irregularities in their electrical installations.

The company said that more people were being sought by the police for involvement in the scheme.

Radio Mozambique reports that an estimated 50% of the energy consumed in Infulene is stolen.
