Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, on Monday sent a message of condolence to his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, for the deaths and damage caused by floods in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
“At this time of pain and discomfort, on behalf of the People and Government of the Republic of Mozambique and on behalf of myself, I wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to Your Excellency, to the People and the Government of the Republic of South Africa. Our solidarity goes to the families directly affected by this unparalleled tragedy,” reads President Nyusi’s message.
“We sincerely hope that they find the encouragement to overcome the pain and trauma caused,” he added.
“This extreme weather event highlights the devastating effects of climate change that are causing severe damage to the South Africa government’s efforts to recover the economy,” still trying to overcome complications caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Nyusi added.
Recent flooding in South Africa has killed at least 443 people, mainly in the Durban region on the country’s east coast, and 63 people are still missing, according to local authorities.
More than 250 schools have been affected, nearly 4,000 homes washed away and more than 13,500 damaged. Many hospitals were also damaged, according to South African authorities.
Authorities estimate hundreds of millions of euros in damage, in a region that had already suffered in July from a wave of rioting and looting.
President Cyril Ramaphosa postponed a working visit to Saudi Arabia to “focus on the government’s intervention in the KwaZulu-Natal flood disaster”, according to the South African presidency.
