Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Director of the Labour Mediation and Arbitration Centre (COMAL), Lourenço Mauai, on Thursday announced that 1,288 labour conflicts were filed in Maputo city in the first half of this year, against 521 in the same period last year, a rise of 59.5%.
Mauai noted that the industry and retail trade sectors had relatively few labour disputes, unlike the private security sector, which broke records in terms of petitions filed.
Lourenço Mauai also revealed that 740 more cases were mediated this year than last.
“These figures indicate that the number of labour conflicts is increasing,” Mauai points out.
He lists as the main causes, unfair dismissals, unilateral termination of employment contracts, lack of payment of compensation and wages or services provided, arbitrary deductions, non-compliance with revocatory employment contract agreements, and lack of remuneration for vacations not taken during the term of the employment contract.
Mauai reported that mediation and arbitration had secured the reinstatement of 36 workers in the first half of this year, against 26 in the same period of 2022.
