Prosecutors Question Tivane

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Dinis Tivane, the legal adviser of former Mozambican presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, was questioned on Monday by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) in the context of the post-election tension characterized by mass demonstrations that turned into rioting.

The mass demonstrations called by Mondlane to protest against the fraudulent results of the elections held last October took place during four months.

During the hearing, Tivane was also made an accused with the obligation to report to the PGR if he intends to leave his home for more than five days. The same measure was taken against Mondlane himself when he was questioned last March about the wave of protests.

In a message made public on his Facebook account, Tivane says that “I was questioned for the first time at the Central Office for Combating Organized and Transnational Crime (GCCCOT), in the PGR building. This follows my indictment last week, on 24 April.”

He also revealed that the questions asked by the prosecutors were centred on the mass demonstrations.

“The session started at 09.45, although we arrived at 09.00 and it lasted approximately nine hours”, said Tivane. At the end, I was admonished with the Term of Identity and Residence, the normal coercive measure in situations of this sort. It is the same as that imposed on Venâncio Mondlane”. reads the message. This means that Tivane had to identify himself, give his address, and contact the PGR if he intends to leave home for more than five days.

Tivane also announced that the new political party headed by Mondlane, Anamalala, has successfully registered with the Ministry of Justice. He said this marks a new stage in the consolidation of democracy in Mozambique. In Portuguese, Anamalala is an acronym meaning “National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique”. But it is also an expression in the Makua language meaning “it has finished”, or “it is going to finish”. The “it” in question is the system of governance headed by the ruling Frelimo Party.
