Africa-Press – Mozambique. The staff of Quelimane Municipal Council, in the central Mozambican province of Zambezia, on Monday decided to stop some of their activities in order to demand five months wages, which they claim are in arrears.
The staff, including municipal police officers, have opted for a partial strike, stopping some of their activities in order to demand their rights.
The municipal workers are threatening to go on a general strike and to bring all the municipal services to a complete standstill if the problem is not solved by the end of the week. Other employees took the opportunity to denounce not only the wage arrears but also the lack of medical assistance, despite the monthly deductions from their wages made to the National Social Security Institute (INSS).
“We have been working without pay for five months and without any communication from the management. We have also made several attempts to negotiate, but without success”, said one of the employees.
Clércia da Caridade, the Municipal Councillor for Administration and Finance, speaking to reporters, said the delay in paying wages concerns some problems that the municipal administration is facing regarding the functioning of SISTAFE (the electronic State Financial Administration System).
She explained that the problem may be solved within the current week, and the National Treasury will have to replenish the municipal compensation fund.
A similar problem has occurred in the southern municipality of Inhambane where staff are demanding three months of wage arrears and are also threaten to paralyse all municipal services.
