Renamo denies report that Momade has been given a sinecure

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s former rebel movement Renamo has denied a report circulating on social media that its leader, Ossufo Momade, has been appointed a non-executive director of the publicly owned insurance company, EMOSE.

The report was first announced by a group of demobilised former Renamo guerrillas on Saturday, and appears to be part of this group’s campaign to unseat Momade as President of the Party.

The Renamo national spokesperson, Marcial Macome, cited in the independent daily “O Pais”, said the claim by the demobilised guerrillas showed “an attitude of bad faith which merely seeks to denigrate the image of the party, its president and his family”.

The former Renamo fighters met on Saturday in the central city of Chimoio where they were drawing up strategies for their long-running battle to remove Momade from the leadership.

Macome said “we were surprised by the claim that President Ossufo Momade has been appointed to a post in EMOSE. This information is not true. Ossufo Momade has not been contacted either by the President of the Republic (Daniel Chapo) or by the Prime Minister (Benvinda Levy) to talk about any kind of appointment”.

“The commitment of President Ossufo Momade is still to Renamo and we don’t know where this information is coming from”, Macome declared.

“We want to reiterate that this claim is made in bad faith, because, if it were true, there would have been dispatches and the information would have been shared with the mass media”, he added. “Since it was not shared, we challenge those who have circulated this information to prove the appointment and show us the dispatches that announced it”.
