Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Italian multinational Renco Group, concessionaire for the construction of a new Pemba Bay port and industrial complex relating to the FLNG project there, is looking for contractors to build the second phase of the infrastructure, which will support onshore activities associated with the possible resumption of gas exploitation in Area 4 of the Rovuma basin.
The first phase of construction was interrupted by the intensification of terrorist attacks in some areas of the province. But, motivated by the resumption of offshore activities, the multinational is accelerating the project in line with perceived on-shore requirements.
According to the director of the Development Area for Renco Group Projects in Mozambique, Mario d’Antoni, quoted by the Profile Mozambican news portal, even if activities are not resumed at the TotalEnergies camp in Afungi, Palma district, solutions must nevertheless be prepared to respond to the activities of the off-shore Coral Sul project.
“Offshore activities will need support in terms of maintenance and other industrial and logistical needs, so we thought our port would have more value if it offered such auxiliary services,” he said.
The industrial complex, which includes a technical service area and industrial logistics assets such as warehouses, workshops and offices, is being designed to support the Afungi camp, functioning as a strategic logistics point in the provision of goods and services through Pemba Bay.
To date, around US$90 million have been invested in port and industrial complex projects in Pemba, with the completion of the works scheduled for March next year and the start of operations in April, 2023. The port will be able to accommodate ships of up to 2,000 tons.
