Africa-Press – Mozambique. Thirteen people lost their lives this Thursday morning (29) following a road accident in Tsangano district, central Mozambican province of Tete.

The accident happened when the driver lost control of his truck around a curve after going down a steep road. The truck ended up overturning, injuring also 17 people.

Those with mild injuries were treated at the local health centre, while others who sustained serious injuries were evacuated to the Tete Provincial Hospital. Among the injured there are two with severe head trauma.

Julieta Agy, substitute of the Tete provincial health director said that patients with mild complications are already under medical care.

“Right now they are all stable. We have two patients who will probably be taken to the intensive care unit in our hospital. Others, although they are inpatients, are still under follow-up and under observation”, said Agy quoted by Radio Mozambique.

Agy added that some patients under observation may undergo surgery and blood donations may be required.

“Because of their surgical needs they need blood. So we take this opportunity to request those who are able to donate to approach our Blood Bank. It is open 24 hours”.

Asked about the reasons for the accident, the commander of the Mozambican Police in Tsangano, Carlos Cabeça, pointed out overload combined with mechanical problems of the truck.

“From our evaluation on the site and since it was a steep road, the vehicle ended up encountering mechanical problems. It was unable to get down and around the curve”, he explained

The truck involved in the accident was taking goods and people to an agricultural fair in the region.
