Africa-Press – Mozambique. Nine people were killed and five others seriously injured early Monday in a road accident involving a passenger minibus and two cargo trucks on National Highway No. 4 (N4) in Moamba district, Maputo province, southern Mozambique.
The vehicles were traveling in the same direction when one of the cargo trucks crashed into the rear of a passenger minibus that was stopped in a traffic queue, pushing it forward into another truck ahead, said the National Road Transport Institute in a press release quoted by the Mozambique News Agency (AIM).
Mozambican President Daniel Chapo expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the bereaved families, stressing that the tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for safer driving practices.
Chapo also said the accident highlights the urgent need to strengthen road safety in Mozambique and across Southern Africa.
“This tragic episode must serve as a reminder of the need to reinforce prudence and responsibility on our roads. I therefore urge all citizens to strictly observe traffic regulations in order to protect lives and prevent similar tragedies from continuing to claim lives and plunge families and our country into mourning,” he added.
