Road accident leaves 5 dead, 14 injured in Manhiça, southern Mozambique

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Five people died and another 14 were injured because of a car collision that took place Thursday morning on Mozambique’s main road EN1 in Manhiça district, in the southern province of Maputo.

The accident involved two vehicles, one for semi-collective passenger transport (locally known as Chapa), and the other a van, which was heading in opposite directions, according to the district’s police spokesman Ibrahimo Antonio, who was speaking to the press at the scene.

The mini-bus was heading to South Africa, TVM reports.

The police presumed that poor visibility due to a cloud of smoke derived from the burning of grass at the roadside and irregular overtaking were the main causes of the accident.

The injured, between serious and minor, were taken to the Manhiça District Hospital for medical treatment.

The Mozambican government recently announced a series of measures including the installation of speed-control radars and the reintroduction of breathalysers to prevent bloodshed on the national highways.
