Africa-Press – Mozambique. People in the district of Massinga, in the province of Inhambane, southern Mozambique, blocked the National Road 1 (N1) on Tuesday in protest after the police shot two people, local authorities said.

“The population hopes for a positive outcome after what happened, and they are setting up barricades, traffic is limited, and the police are there to see what they can do, to talk to the population, to see if they will open the road,” explained the spokesperson for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Inhambane, Nércia Bata.

On Sunday, a passenger vehicle failed to stop at the Massinga toll booth and a police vehicle then pursued it to force it to use the toll booth and pay the appropriate fee. The officers fired shots during the chase, eventually hitting two people in a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction, the police spokesperson told Lusa.

“Rescuers took the victims to hospital and they were still alive. They were receiving treatment there, but the hospital discharged one of them the same day. After that, authorities called the victims to file a complaint, drew up a report and forwarded it to the Public Prosecutor’s Office,” she said.

Authorities opened an inquiry into the shooting, which left several people injured. At the same time, authorities conduct disciplinary proceedings against the officers involved, while they relocate the police station to calm tensions, explained Nércia Bata.
