Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Road Fund in the northern Mozambican province of Niassa, owes 280.4 million meticais (4.3 million dollars at the current exchange rate) to building contractors who, during the rainy season, worked on the province’s roads to guarantee accessibility.

According to Narciso dos Santos, delegate of the Road Fund in Niassa, who was speaking on Monday during the Provincial Meeting of the Roads Sector, there is still a debt accumulated since last year, amounting to 441.7 million meticais, which remains unpaid.

“The lack of funding from the state has led contractors to resort to their own resources to carry out road maintenance work in the province. This debt is related to the maintenance work carried out on provincial, urban and district roads”, he said.

For his part, the Secretary of State in Niassa, Silva Livone, called on the Road Fund and the National Road Administration (ANE) to work in order to pay the debt. “We must work in coordination with the central bodies in order to pay the debt. We appreciate the determination of the contractors, who have even used their own means and resources to guarantee accessibility in the province”, he said.
