Africa-Press – Mozambique. Sofala province is grappling with a measles outbreak. Twenty-two cases of the disease have so far been reported, without any deaths. The outbreak started at the beginning of the year, and has affected the districts of Caia, Chemba, Nhamatanda, Cheringoma, Búzi and Maringuè.
Almost all the measles cases have involved children under five years old, according to the director of the Provincial Health Service in Sofala. Priscila Filimone said that, to avoid the outbreak spreading, a vaccination campaign would shortly take place in the province.
“Measles is a highly contagious disease, and if we don’t pay attention and block it, this epidemic could expand,” she said. “We might not be able to contain it outside those neighbouring districts.”
Preparations for the vaccination campaign are now being finalised, Filimone said, calling on the population to join the government’s efforts and help break the chain of transmission.
