Son Arrested for Delivering Cannabis Samosas to Father

Africa-Press – Mozambique. A 20-year-old man has been arrested in Nampula, northern Mozambique, for attempting to smuggle cannabis into the local prison, allegedly for his father, who is incarcerated there. The narcotics were concealed inside samosas, a police source said on Wednesday.

“The individual’s behaviour caught the attention of the officers, who decided to conduct a search. During the inspection, it was found that nine of the ten samosas being transported contained small sachets of suruma [cannabis],” Nampula police spokesman Dércio Samuel told reporters.

The incident occurred at the Nampula Provincial Penitentiary.

According to Samuel, the young man confessed “that he intended to deliver the drugs to his father,” who is serving a sentence there.

He also told the officers that his father had instructed him to bring the cannabis because he already had clients waiting inside the prison.

“According to the young man, the sale of the drug inside the prison would serve to generate some income for the family’s survival,” the spokesperson further explained.

The PRM spokesperson admitted that the corporation was concerned about the increasing number of attempts to smuggle narcotics into the prisons in Nampula, the country’s most populous province.

“This demonstrates the persistence of networks committed to smuggling drugs into penitentiary establishments. We will continue with search and inspection operations on vehicles, people, and in prisons to stop this type of criminal act,” the spokesperson stated.

Mozambique is grappling with a problem of prison overcrowding, currently housing approximately 21,000 inmates in facilities with a planned capacity of 4,498, according to the Ministry of Justice.
