South Africa deports 164 Mozambicans

Africa-Press – Mozambique. South African authorities last week deported 164 Mozambicans.

Spokesman for the provincial Migration Directorate in Maputo, Juca Bata, explained that some of those deported were accused of having committed crimes.

“Among these, some were accused of committing various irregularities and crimes. Two were accused of murder and two of theft on public roads,” he said

Migration authorities in Maputo province are concerned about the prevalence of deportation of Mozambicans for their illegal status in South Africa and are already working in coordination with the Directorate of Migratory Work in the neighbouring country to review the scenario.

“We are specifically talking about farm workers and miners who are issued passports in order to prevent them working in that country without documents, which in the end culminates in their repatriation. At the local level, efforts are also being made to raise awareness among the general population with a view to ensuring that everyone obtains documents, which is why all departments are setting up mobile brigades to issue passports, so as to prevent Mozambican citizens leaving the country without documents,” Bata said.
