Africa-Press – Mozambique. At least three people died due to bad weather in Mocuba district, Zambézia province, on Monday, a source from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) announced on Tuesday.

“At the moment we have three deaths, two of which resulted from the collapse of houses and one from atmospheric discharge [lightning],” said Nelson Ludovico, INGD delegate in Zambézia, quoted by Televisão de Moçambique.

Ludovico reported that there were still teams on the ground assessing whether further damage had been caused by the wind and heavy rain recorded on Monday.

Nelson Ludovico also warned that, this being just the start of the rainy season, preventive measures should be taken to forestall more victims falling foul of bad weather.

“It is important to note that we are just at the start [of the rainy season], and it is better to be prepared. While the south zone will have little rain, our central zone, from January to March, will record normal rainfall with a tendency to above normal,” the INGD delegate said.
