Surgical unit opens in Ile, Zambézia, with Portucel support

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The district of Ile in Zambézia province has a new surgical ward since this Monday, when it was officially opened by Governor Pio Augusto Matos. The infrastructure has 23 rooms, including two operating theatres, two nursing wards, a waiting room, a treatment area and sanitary facilities, among other essential spaces for the provision of surgical care.

This surgical unit was set up with the support of Portucel Moçambique, whose CEO, Paulo Silva, said that the investment was the result of collaboration with local authorities and aims to respond to the communities’ priorities.

“This contribution is part of our Social Development Program, which seeks to improve food security, generate income and intervene in key areas such as education and health,” Silva said.

Provincial Director of Health Blayton Caetano highlighted that the new operating rooms would permit the introduction of new aspects of surgical care, such as consultations for emergency and elective surgeries. The services will cover general, obstetric and male circumcision interventions.

During his speech, Governor Pio Matos highlighted that the start of operations of this surgical unit marks the end of a long period of hardship for the local population, directly benefiting around 250,000 inhabitants of Ile and, indirectly, another 180,000 residents of the neighbouring district of Namarroi.

This inauguration brings Zambézia’s total number of operating rooms to 11. The requalification of the current Ilé Health Centre into a district hospital, to adapt to the new level of services expected and better meet the needs of the population, is also planned.
