Africa-Press – Mozambique. VARIOUS government leaders, retirees, and residents of Lupaso Village in Masasi District, Mtwara Region, gathered today to attend a special memorial service marking five years since the death of the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Benjamin William Mkapa.
The service took place at Mkapa’s family home in Lupaso and was led by the retired Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, His Eminence Polycarp Cardinal Pengo, assisted by Bishop Titus Mdoe of the Catholic Diocese of Mtwara.
The Guest of Honour at the event was the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi. Other notable attendees included former President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, accompanied by his spouse.
Benjamin Mkapa, who served as the President of Tanzania from 1995 to 2005, passed away on July 23, 2020, and was laid to rest in his home village of Lupaso on July 29, 2020. This year’s commemoration held deep significance for the nation, reflecting on his substantial contributions to Tanzania’s development.
The memorial service offered a moment of reflection and remembrance of Mkapa’s leadership, patriotism, and integrity. Both leaders and citizens emphasized the importance of honoring his vision and legacy for the betterment of the country.
