Teachers denounce ‘compulsory transfers’ as a form of ‘psychological pressure’

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The National Association of Teachers of Mozambique (Anapro) today complained about “compulsory transfers” in the education sector, accusing authorities of exercising “psychological pressure” against protesting teachers.

“The transfers that are being carried out now are illegal and make teachers increasingly unmotivated,” the Anapro spokesperson Marcos Mulima told Lusa today.

Mulima said that the transfers are used as strategies of “psychological repression” against teachers protesting against delays in the payment of overtime and demanding better educational conditions.

In Inhambane province alone, around 76 transfers were made in just four secondary schools, he added.

On Monday, the Teachers’ Association held a meeting with Minister of Education Samaria dos Anjos Tovela to “stem the tide” and discuss the problems affecting the profession, which has been complaining for months.

“We asked the minister to intervene to put an end to this whole situation,” Mulima said.

Among other things, Mozambican teachers are protesting delays in the payment of overtime for two months and 18 days in 2022, for the whole of 2023 and also for the whole of 2024, as well as demanding “better classification” in the Single Salary Table (TSU).
