Africa-Press – Mozambique. Some secondary school teachers in the city of Maputo have not received their salaries for around a year, while the education authorities remain silent on the matter.
Teachers from the KaTembe, KaMavota and Kamubukwana municipal districts in Maputo have decided to break their silence after not receiving their salaries for around a year.
They feel marginalised, unfairly treated and demand explanations from the Education Department.
In a report published by the newspaper O País, the teachers said that nothing is being said about the non-payment of their salaries from last year, even with the start of the 2024 academic year approaching.
“The entire year 2023 passed without us receiving the amount of the months in arrears. What makes us most indignant is that teachers in some municipal districts were paid, and we were not. I left a province to come work in Maputo, but I didn’t have a salary,” one teacher said, on condition of anonymity.
“We have been going after it for a long time. However, the information from schools is that they do not know and that the Ministry of Economy and Finance is not making the amount available. But the institution says it has already made it available.”
Meanwhile, these teachers say they are accumulating debts and finding themselves in increasingly dire financial straits. “We took on debt for a year as a way to cover transportation and food expenses in our homes and, until now, we have had no response.”
The teachers in question were hired in 2023, and are part of a group of about 100 teachers who complain about the lack of salaries.
The Maputo City Council Education Department has not yet commented on the matter.
