Africa-Press – Mozambique. Valige Tauabo, governor of the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, has accused the Islamist terrorists active in the province of using children as shields in their raids.
According to Tauabo, who was speaking on Thursday at the headquarters of Mbau administrative post, in Mocímboa da Praia district, “this new strategy used by terrorists is aimed at preventing the intervention of the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS).”
“These are children aged between 12 and 13, kidnapped by the terrorists during their raids on villages in the province. They place children at the front during their movements, in clear violation of Universal Children’s Rights”, accused the Governor.
He also said that “this new strategy has created constraints in the pursuit of terrorists by government forces and their counterparts from Rwanda, who remain committed to combating terrorism.”
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed its concern at the increase in cases of the kidnapping of minors by armed groups. These kidnapped minors are forced to carry out combat and non-combat actions, which puts in danger their safety and well-being.
