Thirty-one people apparently released by terrorists from bases in the north of the country arrived in Mocímboa da Praia in Cabo Delgado province on Tuesday night.
The 31 people were reportedly released from captivity as a result of pressure on the insurgents applied by the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS) and Military Mission of the Southern African Development Community (SAMIM) and Rwandan troops.
Mediafax learned from a local source that those freed entered the town via the Luvula area to the south. They passed through the Nabubussi neighbourhood on the way to the district command, already accompanied by security forces.
Those released spoke of the deterioration of conditions among the terrorists, with lack of food and recurrently fleeing from one place to another.
Publicly, the Mozambican authorities have frequently said that attacks on villages are the work of terrorist groups in search of food while on the run due to the intensification of the government and friendly forces’ actions.
Two weeks ago, during a visit to Mocímboa da Praia, President Nyusi appealed to members of the insurgent groups to surrender, so that they could be forgiven and reintegrated into communities.
But core terrorists have rarely surrendered to the authorities, for fear that the promise of forgiveness was not sincere.
