Africa-Press – Mozambique. On 11-12 of May the second annual Transport Evolution conference was held at the port of Maputo. Attendants from across Africa gathered hear the newest developments regarding transportation and to network with fellow peers.
The conference covered a range of topics. On the opening morning Mr Willie Shumba from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presented its plans on Africa’s trade corridors and how the AfCFTA will affect cross-border business. Mr Shumba mentioned the goal for African countries to improve their manufacturing capabilities, prioritising the development of value adding processes in our extraction industries.
A common theme throughout the conference was the integration of technology into the African transportation infrastructure. With an increase in availability of data, panellists mentioned a need to focus on data sharing and management throughout the logistics chain. This is to improve cargo security and customs efficiency, amongst other bottlenecks, leveraging new technologies within the African transportation context.
On the second day representatives from the ports of Maputo, Nacala and Pemba presented their respective expansion plans. The port of Nacala is undergoing significant developments, with overall TEU handling capacity increasing form 100,000 TEUs per year to 252,000.
Emphasis was set on the need for FDI into warehousing and additional storage capacity.
The conference was concluded with a session on sustainability. Representatives from Moore Global and Earth Energy presented their ideas on how African Transporters can effectively initiate and report their ESG activities.
