Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican authorities have detained two people in Chitima, in the western province of Tete, in possession of 119 identity cards, reports the independent television station, STV.

In connection with the case, an official of the National Civil Identification Directorate is under investigation by the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic).

The Civil Identification Directorate confirmed the detentions on Friday. It said the 119 identity cards were issued in the names of people from Chifunde, Angonia, Tsangano and Cahora Bassa districts, all in Tete.

“The two individuals detained are now in the Tete city prison, and are awaiting criminal proceedings”, said a spokesperson for the Directorate, Gilda Lameque. He said the two men used the identity documents in order to register SIM cards for mobile phones. Investigations are continuing to ascertain exactly how they obtained the documents.

Lameque said the Directorate is determined to take action against any of its staff involved in acts of corruption or attempts to falsify documents.

The case is now being handled by the Tete provincial branch of the Office for the Fight against Corruption (GCCC).
