Umbeluzi River may reach flood alert level

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s Southern Regional Water Board (ARA-Sul) has warned of a rise in the water levels of the main rivers in Maputo province, particularly the Umbeluzi River, as a result of the torrential rain that has been falling since Sunday morning.

“The Umbeluzi River and its tributaries, specifically the Movene and Calichane rivers, have seen a significant increase. The water levels may reach flood alert level”, reads a statement from ARA-Sul.

According to the note, the Pequenos Libombos dam will start discharging water into the Umbeluzi gradually and in a controlled manner. The Umpala and Mazambanine drifts will be affected and flooding on the lower reaches of the rivers is expected.

“ARA Sul therefore calls on users to take precautionary measures when travelling on the Maputo, Umbeluzi, Incomati and Limpopo rivers and to remove people and goods from the banks, as there is a risk that they will be swept away by the force of the waters”, reads the document.

For its part, the publicly-owned port and rail company, CFM, announced that as a result of the heavy rain, all trains in the southern region scheduled for Monday have been cancelled.

“At the moment, our operational team is monitoring the situation and, as soon as the safety conditions are in place, we will resume activities”, it says.
