UN General Assembly President Emphasizes Reform Commitment

Africa-Press – Mozambique. UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock on Wednesday highlighted “strong commitment” among member states to reform the UN.

“The vast majority of member states underline that it’s the United Nations what the world needs, also, for the next 80 years, committing to reform this institution…The strong commitment to reform this institution, to save the institution,” Baerbock told reporters when asked about specific outcomes of the 80th session of the assembly.

Situation in the Gaza Strip was “one the most important outcomes” of that high-level week, Baerbock said.

She underscored that this year’s assembly marked an unprecedented level of support — not just for a two-state solution — but also for the security of both Israelis and Palestinians.

“There has never been before such a strong commitment for an own independent Palestinian state…But secondly, there has never been before such a strong commitment, especially also from the region to the security of the state of Israel,” she said.

There was a high attendance during the general debate, including 189 member states, out of which were 124 heads of state, Baerbock said.

“During the debates, we could also see that the most pressing issue is peace and security,” she added.
