WORLD CUP 2022: Fourteen goals a day and oldest player in action

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The ninth day of FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar made a record of producing more goals on a single day (14) than any other day.

It all started with a 3-3 outcome between Cameroon versus Serbia, Ghana’s 3-2 victory over South Korea, Brazil’s 1-0 triumph against Switzerland and a 2-0 success by Portugal over Uruguay.

Also, at 39 years old, Portugal defender Kepler Pepe has gone to history books for becoming the oldest player to feature at the progressing tournament.

He shined during his side’s 2-0 triumph against Uruguay on Monday night, an outcome which eventually has driven them to the last 16.

Again, Portugal’s playmaker Bruno Fernandes has become the first player to have two goals and two assists respectively, after contributing a brace against Uruguay.

Another eye-catching moment during this match was that the game had to be briefly paused when a pitch intruder made his way onto the playing field.

He put on a t-shirt with ‘Save Ukraine’ words upfront and ‘Respect for Iranian Women’ at the back while waving a rainbow flag before he was subdued by security officers.

As such, the Portugal versus Uruguay encounter is also on record to be the first duel to be halted momentarily following a fan intrusion.

Until this juncture, no goal has been scored from a direct free-kick.
