Africa-Press – Mozambique. The government wants to disrupt the production and sales of spirit beverages colloquially known as “xivotxongo”.

Government spokesperson Inocêncio Impissa said yesterday at the end of a Council of Ministers session that a study would be conducted to assess the degree to which these beverages cause problems for society.

“The government’s position is that factories that manufacture harmful products must indeed be shut down. This doesn’t mean shutting down a single beverage factory, but rather the production of a specific product line that is consumed and has proven to be harmful to society, particularly young people,” Impissa explained.

He added that there is already an ongoing campaign to remove vendors of these products from the vicinity of schools to minimise direct contact between young people, adolescents, and children and these beverages or other harmful substances.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Economy temporarily suspended the issuing of licenses for the production and sale of alcoholic beverages, indicating in a note that this was to prevent the proliferation of establishments producing and selling alcoholic beverages in public spaces, especially near schools.

The document explains that regulations will soon be approved to control the production, sale, and consumption of alcoholic beverages in the country overall.
