Young man dies in police custody in Maputo, NGO demands accountability

Africa-Press – Mozambique. A young man identified as Macassar Abacar died in the cells of the 7th PRM Police Station in Maputo on Friday night, after allegedly being assaulted by police agents, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) reports.

According to sources cited by the CDD in a report demanding accountability and released by the NGO on Saturday (23-07), the young man went to a bar on Thursday night to collect a debt. A barmaid called the police.

Police went to the bar, where they arrested Macassar Abacar, better known as Cebolinha, and took him to the 7th Police Station in Maputo City, after allegedly beating him.

CDD sources point to this aggression as one of the probable causes of Cebolinha’s death at the police station.

After learning about the young man’s arrest, his father went to the police station to try to secure his release, but was unable to do so.

The CDD also alleges that Cebolinha required medical attention after being beaten by the police, but his father was not allowed to take him to hospital.

On Saturday morning, the father returned to the 7th Police Station, where he was informed that his son had lost his life.

In the video below. director of the CDD and chair of Mozambique Network of Human Rights Defenders Adriano Nuvunga says that Cebolinha’s body showed marks of torture.
