Africa-Press – Mozambique. The governor of the Bank of Mozambique, Rogério Zandamela, and Mayor of Lichinga, Luís Jumo, on Wednesday jointly inaugurated the Praça do Metical (Metical Square) in Niassa province’s capital city.
This square is one of several that the Bank of Mozambique has been developing with the aim of enhancing the perception of the metical as a symbol of sovereignty, history and national identity.
“We intend the Metical Square to praise our currency, the metical, one of the most important symbols of our sovereignty and conquest, so I would like to reinforce our appeal that the square be valued and conserved,” the governor of the Bank of Mozambique said.
Governor Zandamela said that the square was built on the site of a former kindergarten had sensitised the country’s central bank to the importance of leisure spaces for the little ones.
Zandamela said he hoped that the Praças do Metical project would bring positive results in the field of financial literacy, one of the central bank’s main social responsibility foci.
“We are convinced that this square will help to reinforce the process of financial education, both locally and at national level, since the project for the implementation of Metical Squares covers all the provinces of the country,” Zandamela stressed.
For his part, Mayor Luís Jumo expressed gratitude at the central bank’s gift to the children of Lichinga, which he dubbed the “most beautiful and dazzling Metical Square in the country”.
Mayor Jumo said he believed that Lichinga’s new Praça do Metical would help restore the city’s beauty, and pledged to do everything possible to maintain and preserve the space.
