President Nyusi condoles death of Kenneth Kaunda, a giant of Southern Africa’s liberation struggle

AfricaPress-mozambique: President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi has issued a message of condolences on the death yesterday of former Zambian statesman Kenneth Kaunda.

Filipe Nyusi said that it was with great sadness that he learned of the news of the death of Kenneth David Kaunda, observing that he was one of the founding leaders of the Front Line countries that led the political and economic emancipation of the southern region of Africa and the African continent.

“The Republic of Zambia, the SADC, and indeed the entire African continent, will remember the late President Kaunda as a great leader who played a crucial role in the movement that led Zambia to self-determination and full independence,” said Nyusi.

In his message, the head of state says that the SADC region and the entire African continent are grateful for the important contribution Kaunda made in the common efforts in defence of independence, peace and security in this part of the world. “His gigantic legacy will shine forever and will inspire the present and future generation of leaders in Zambia, the region, across the African continent and beyond,” says President Nyusi.

Kenneth Kaunda died in Kinshasa, the Zambian capital,on Thursday June 17.

The eighth child of missionary parents from Malawi, Kaunda left the teaching profession at the age of 27 to embrace the cause of his country’s emancipation.

He emerged as an important figure in the liberation struggles in southern Africa, his government supporting liberation movements in Mozambique, Angola, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa.

Born on April 28, 1924, Kaunda outlived Nelson Mandela and Robert Mugabe, fellow giants of the southern African liberation struggle.
