Sankwasa slams tribalism, corruption

Africa-Press – Namibia. Minister of Urban and Rural Development James Sankwasa has issued a strong warning against tribalism and corruption, saying both continue to undermine Namibia’s unity and development. Speaking at Independence Day commemorations in Oshikango in the Ohangwena region Saturday, Sankwasa said Namibia’s freedom was achieved through unity, not division.

“Independence was not won by one tribe. It was a collective effort by all Namibians united in the fight for freedom,” he said.

He expressed concern that despite political freedom, tribalism and discrimination still influence access to opportunities, with some citizens feeling excluded in certain areas.

“It is troubling that even today, some Namibians do not feel free in their own country. Tribalism and racism continue to divide us and deny people equal opportunities,” Sankwasa said.

He called on citizens to reject tribalism and safeguard national unity, warning that division weakens development and national progress. Turning to corruption, Sankwasa said it remains a serious threat to service delivery and economic growth.

“If corruption continues, how will Namibia grow? Those who engage in corrupt activities must be identified and held accountable,” he said.

He urged Namibians to uphold integrity and work together to build a united and prosperous nation.
