Africa-Press – Namibia. To ensure continued monthly grants for veterans, N$1.3 billion has been allocated for their welfare during the 2026/27 financial year.
This was announced by deputy minister of defence and veterans affairs Chalres Mubita on Monday while motivating the budget in the National Assembly.
“Under this programme, psychosocial assistance, medical assistance, improvement for ex-plan combatants and monthly grants, once-off lump sum gratuity, as well as individual veterans projects will all be covered,” he said.
The liberation struggle heritage programme, which has been allocated N$13 million, is to ensure the liberation struggle’s history is preserved, he said.
Under this programme, funeral assistance for deceased veterans is covered, as well as the marking of heritage places, and erecting and marking tomb stones.
Mubita said the government will continue to honour veterans and to improve their livelihoods and living standard for their immense contribution to the liberation of the country.
During the 2025/26 financial year, veterans received an allocation of N$1.5 billion, of which 94.16% was used.
“The largest cost driver within the budget was the payment of monthly grants to veterans. A total of N$1 billion was expended on monthly financial assistance, benefiting 23 694 veterans by March 2026. This accounted for 68.41% of the total allocation,” Mubita said.
