Africa-Press – Namibia. ALBERT ‘Hoonjo’ Tjihero, considered one of the greatest footballers Namibia has ever produced and among the most successful farmers in the country while also known as a ‘torchbearer’ in the plight of communal farmers, has been arrested for alleged stock theft along with his son and four other men.

Tjihero (65), son Kevin Tjihero (30), Joel Katjivi (34), Ruben Ndatowe (33), Karitjindua Katunahange (22) and Jeremia Helau (45) are accused of stealing four calves valued at N$52 000 from Ockert Steyn at Farm Okorusengo at Hochfeld, in the Okahandja district. Steyn rents land on the property from Tjihero.

The men were arrested on the way to the Dankbar auction and the animals were recovered by the Hochfeld police with the assistance of the Okondjatu police.

A Toyota Legend 45 double cab and a trailer used in the commissioning of the alleged offence have also been confiscated. Tjihero, former Black Beauty Chiefs (BBC) and African Stars icon, was the first young footballer to captain a national team.

In 1975, he lead the then South West Africa Black Eleven against their White counterparts at the ‘Suidwes’ Stadion, where a record 35 000 spectators attended the historic occasion.
