Africa-Press – Namibia. FEEDING Namibia launched a feeding station for the children of Swakopmund’s Democratic Resettlement Community (DRC) informal settlement.
More than 100 children will receive meals from the station twice a week, with food provided by churches and businesses at the coast.
A vegetable garden was started to teach children to grow vegetables for the kitchen, while they will also receive after-school care and Christian education.
Project founder Freddy van Niekerk at the launch said the group hopes to extend feeding days soon, and plans to expand the food security project to other towns.
Swakopmund mayor Louisa Kativa earlier this week officiated at the event and applauded the group for its effort in ensuring children do not go hungry.
“We know food security in Namibia is a problem. We are happy to see that Feeding Namibia wants to feed the children from the DRC,” she said.
The project started four years ago, with the group distributing food to different soup kitchens and organisations at the town. It is expected that the Swakopmund municipality will made land available.
