Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Ekulo Secondary School was named the winner of the inter-school debate competition, which had its conclusion on Thursday in Oshakati.

88 learners from several schools in the Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati, and Oshikoto regions participated in the four-day competition.

Inter-school debate events are a great venue for learners to demonstrate their analytical, public speaking, and critical thinking abilities.

These contests are crucial for learners’ academic development, but they also have a big impact on their personal growth.

As the overall winner, the learners walked away with N$1 200, a trophy, gold medals and school goodies. Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo SS as second runner-up received N$1 000, trophy, silver medals and school goodies, while Gabriel Taapopi (GT) SS received N$800, trophy, bronze medals and school goodies.

According to Beata Iita, chief education officer for the division of lifelong learning, the goal of this debate is to build competitive platforms and develop future leaders.

She said a similar activity boosts students’ self-confidence and self-esteem and is also learner-centred, which enhances higher-order and critical thinking skills.

“Our learners will also be given the tools they need to enhance their communication skills,” she said.

She continued by saying that doing so will improve their capacity for organizing and structuring their thoughts.
