Africa-Press – Namibia. THE City of Windhoek, in collaboration with UNICEF Namibia and various stakeholders, celebrated the 2023 Health & Hygiene Promotion Month and Global Hand Washing Day on Thursday.

Mayor Joseph Uapingene, addressing the event, emphasized the importance of health and hygiene practices in the city.

The City of Windhoek has embraced the World Health Organization’s handwashing initiative as a means to promote health and hygiene among community members and food handlers, especially at the city’s markets. Mayor Uapingene stressed the significance of simple practices like regular handwashing, proper food handling, and maintaining clean living spaces in the fight against infections and diseases.

During the event, a demonstration showcased the proper technique for handwashing with soap and water. Global Handwashing Day, a worldwide advocacy day, aims to raise awareness about the effectiveness of handwashing with soap in preventing diseases and saving lives.

According to the City of Windhoek, the Health and Environment Division conducted an evaluation of several city markets to assess their cleanliness as part of the city’s hygiene promotion activities. The results revealed that Soweto Market was declared the cleanest market in the big/large market category, while Limbandugila Market was announced as the cleanest small market. Stokes Market was recognized as the most improved market, having significantly improved from a subpar score last year. In addition, individual traders from various markets were honoured for maintaining clean stalls.

The commemoration of Health & Hygiene Promotion Month and Global Hand Washing Day demonstrates the City of Windhoek’s commitment to promoting public health and enhancing hygiene standards within the community.
