Government committed to alleviating impact of drought – Nandi-Ndaitwah

Africa-Press – Namibia. VICE President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has raised concerns about the severe drought gripping the nation, but assured that the government is committed to finding solutions to alleviate its impact.

“As a nation, we are faced with a severe drought that will affect both people and livestock. It’s therefore important for all of us to understand the impact and ramifications of the drought,” she said.

The Vice President made these remarks at the Official Opening of the SWAPO Party Central Committee meeting. This meeting marked SWAPO’s first Ordinary Central Committee gathering for the year, following the Extraordinary meeting that convened on 9th March to plan the party’s course following the passing of President Hage Geingob.

“When we met last month, I mentioned that, as a country, we are likely to face drought. We are almost in the middle of April, with not much improvement on the rain forecast,” Vice President Nandi-Ndaitwah explained.

She also drew attention to the plight of several other African nations grappling with drought, citing Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe’s declarations of natural disasters. This, she emphasized, means that Namibia also has to map out strategies to be able to go through the drought.

“I can assure you that our government is committed to working out strategies to mitigate the impact of the drought. However, those strategies will only be successful if those administrating the programmes will work to ensure that they deliver the service to the intended beneficiaries. I therefore appeal to strong cooperation on the part of all those who are going to be involved in the management of the drought,” the Vice President advised.
