Africa-Press – Namibia. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN) has this morning elected its first female bishop, Reverend Hilja Nghaangulwa, who garnered 51 votes against the 23 votes for Reverend John Haufiku. She will lead the church’s Eastern Diocese, where she was the acting head since the former head, Bishop Shekutamba Nambala, went on retirement three years ago and bishop-elect Martin Ngodji died before his bishopric consecration. The church’s synod that is taking place at Ongwediva also elected Reverend Gideon Niitenge as the new bishop heading the church’s Western Diocese. Niitenge was later elected the Church’s Presiding Bishop, having beaten Nghaangulwa 53 votes to 21.
