Africa-Press – Namibia. IN a historic milestone for the Namibian Defence Force (NDF), Commander Rachel Tuyoleni has been promoted to the rank of Captain (Navy), becoming the first female officer in the history of the Namibian Navy to achieve this rank.
The promotion was officiated by the Chief of the NDF, Air Marshal Martin Kambulu Pinehas. The promotion, along with her transfer to Defence Headquarters took effect in April 2025.
Captain (Navy) Tuyoleni’s distinguished military career began in 1996 when she was enlisted into the NDF. After completing her basic military training at the NDF Training Establishment in Osona, she was initially deployed to the Engineer Regiment. She was later transferred to the Maritime Wing in Walvis Bay, which eventually evolved into the Namibian Navy.
Throughout her nearly three-decade-long career, Capt (Navy) Tuyoleni has undertaken various military and academic training programmes in Namibia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Russia.

Capt (Navy) Tuyoleni has received 14 military medals in recognition of her exemplary service, leadership, and dedication to duty.
Her promotion marks a significant step toward greater gender representation in the upper echelons of Namibia’s military leadership.
