Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Namibian Police have provided clarity on a shooting incident whereby a man, identified as Eliud Hamukwaya, 38, was shot dead on Sunday, 11 May 2025, at the Onhuno Road Traffic Checkpoint.

The police claimed that the deceased, Hamukwaya, who was a co-driver, had attempted to run over a female traffic officer manning the roadblock, resulting in police opening fire on him.

“It is alleged that on Sunday, 11 May 2025 at about 22:00 at Onhuno Road Traffic Checkpoint (RTCP), the driver of a Scania truck, who was allegedly with a co-driver, was driving southbound via the RTCP and was stopped by the officer on duty, who requested the driver’s license and weighbridge documents. The driver only managed to provide the driver’s license and failed to produce the weighbridge paper(s) to the police officer on duty,” Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said.

She added that consequently, the officer allegedly requested the driver to park his truck alongside the road as he could not proceed without the weighbridge document.

“The driver adhered to the instruction and, after he parked his truck, he came back to collect his driver’s license. Allegedly, while the driver was still talking with the police officer, the co-driver (the deceased, Hamukwaya) joined them and started arguing with the police officer. The officer then instructed them to drive back to the weighbridge as per the procedure. He (Hamukwaya) went to the truck, made a U-turn facing the northern direction, and then parked the truck alongside the road. He then returned to where the main driver and police officer were and allegedly started insulting and using vulgar language towards the officer on duty, claiming that the officer had a tendency of stopping him at the RTCP. A fight erupted, and the main driver allegedly separated them. Subsequently, the co-driver (Hamukwaya) jumped into the truck and allegedly drove it straight towards a female officer who was on the road manning the checkpoint, trying to stop him. The officer fled from the road for her safety, and in the process, the male police officer took a firearm and fired toward the truck. Unfortunately, a bullet struck the deceased in the stomach, and he died on the spot,” Shikwambi said.

She added that the police officer who shot the deceased is a 43-year-old Namibian male with the rank of Sergeant and has since been arrested.
