Africa-Press – Namibia. The agriculture ministry has intensified efforts to transform its 140-hectare brownfield site in Ekoka village, located east of Okongo town in the Ohangwena region.

This was revealed by the ministry’s accounting officer responsible for agriculture, Ndiyapuki Nghituwamata, during her visit to the site on Thursday.

She said water surveys were being conducted to identify suitable locations for boreholes.

“Once drilled, these boreholes will provide a reliable water supply for the planned irrigation scheme, which is expected to transform the land into a productive agricultural hub,” she stated.

Nghituwamata said the project is expected to not only boost food production but also create employment opportunities and ensure the surrounding community benefits directly from the agricultural produce.

During her visit to the site, Nghituwamata was accompanied by a technical team from the Directorate of Agricultural Production, Extension and Engineering Services.

The team is conducting soil sampling and other essential technical assessments to gather information that will help management make informed decisions and advance the project towards full operational status.

Nghituwamata said this is part of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s directive to acquire and expand more land for agricultural production.

The ministry’s vision is to establish agricultural projects in all 14 regions, ensuring that every region contributes to nutritious food production, job creation, community resilience and promotes national food self-reliance.

Additionally, the land visited serves as a support system for the San Community in the area.

Nghituwamata encouraged the surveyors to finalise their analysis quickly so that the irrigation project can begin without delay.

“We want to turn this brown field into a green field as it has been instructed by the President,” she said.
