Africa-Press – Namibia. The Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) yesterday officially launched the Kavango East regional profile, a comprehensive report based on the 2023 Population and Housing Census results. The profile provides detailed demographic, social, and economic statistics for the region and its constituencies.
“The Statistics Act requires us to conduct a census. In fact, the census originates not from the Statistics Act but from our Constitution; it is a constitutional data framework that helps us understand our nation and supports development,” said Alex Mudabeti, NSA Executive coordinator, who stood in for Statistician General Alex Shimuafeni.
The NSA’s main national report for the Population Census was released in March this year, following a preliminary report issued last year. “We now have many products that followed the main report, and one of them is the regional reports, which we are now launching as profiles,” Mudabeti said.
Alongside the regional profile, the NSA also presented the Kavango East proximity report.
“We produce statistics for planning. The message from the statistician general is to encourage regions to use these statistics in planning, monitoring, and evaluating programmes. We are fortunate that NDP6 has just started as we launch these profiles. By the end of the NDP6 period, we will be measured against this baseline data, giving us the tools to track progress,” Mudabeti noted.
Kavango East governor Hamunyera Hambyuka, who officiated the event, said he was pleased to receive the wealth of information, which is not just numbers and statistics but a factual snapshot of the region’s characteristics.
“We now know, for example, that our great Kavango East region is home to 218,421 residents. This data is a rich and valuable resource that will help us recognise our strengths, address our challenges, and seize opportunities in shaping the future we aspire to have,” he said.
Hambyuka further stated that the transformational data available in the census reports and the profile tailored to Kavango East provides the evidence needed for better planning, effective resource allocation, and measuring progress with confidence.
According to the governor, the Kavango East Regional Profile Report “is our shared roadmap towards sustainable and inclusive development. It is a guide written in the language of facts and grounded in the realities of our people. Together as leaders, policymakers, and citizens, we share a responsibility to ensure that data moves off the page and into action,” he noted.
Ndonga Linena constituency councillor Michael Kampota lauded the regional profile, saying it would help grassroots development and, if used well, could transform rural development.
