Africa-Press – Namibia. The City of Windhoek has approved the exemption of qualifying properties from paying assessment rates for the 2025/26 financial year.
The approval was given during a city council meeting on Monday.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the municipality said each year, organisations such as churches, charities and public institutions may apply for exemption under the Local Authorities Act.
“The council cautioned that exemptions will be revoked if properties are found not to comply, for example, if a property is being used for purposes other than those declared or if rent is being charged by the property owner,” reads the statement.
This measure, the statement added, is to ensure fairness and transparency in how rate exemptions are granted.
For the 2025/26 financial year, the municipality received 158 applications, all of which were inspected to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
However, 13 applications were submitted after the deadline and therefore did not qualify for exemption in line with the act.
