Africa-Press – Namibia. Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare, during his visit to Ndiyona Combined School on Monday, instructed the education ministry, through the regional directorate, to ensure that they work diligently to restore learners’ dignity by rebuilding their hostel blocks and dining hall.
The school hostel block, which accommodated 110 learners from grades 0 to 11, caught fire on Saturday, destroying the infrastructure and their belongings.
Ngurare shared that the government has decided to have all maintenance for government facilities performed by the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) through its trainees.
“We are here to see Ndiyona, and after this, we will visit Neyuva combined school. The reason for this visit is very deliberate. We have discussed TVET trainees assisting schools. At Neyuva, they helped build a hostel, and if it can be done at Neyuva, it can be done anywhere. We have come here for the NTA to observe. I want them to connect with the ministry of eorks to collaborate on the specifications and bill of quantities so we can determine what needs to be done. They will assess and recommend the necessary steps,” said the Prime Minister. “
So therefore if a child here has lost what they have lost here we must do everything to ensure that we bring normalcy to that child regardless whether they are from poor households they have 24 hours just like all of us, so I’m looking forward to that comprehensive report and I want the NTA to see a school like this one, how you are going to see with the director on what is it you need to do to bring rehabilitation to this school,”he added.
Ngurare, while visiting the school, was briefed by the school’s acting principal, Elleuterius Kanyinga. “Our kitchen’s electricity lines were damaged and we had to rely on Linus Shashipapo Secondary School hostel’s kitchen to prepare meals for our learners, the trips were funded from our schools development funds coffer, we had to hire a private vehicle for that week long activity, but our electricity have now been restored and our kitchen is now functional including our cooler room,’’ he said.
He explained that the school, through the education directorate, had managed to obtain mattresses, cups, and plates, with more items, including beds, to be delivered soon.
