Africa-Press – Namibia. Minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Emma Theofelus, said Namibia is committed to getting the basics right, while ensuring the country is not left behind in global efforts on innovation and connectivity, including network and connectivity expansion.
Theofelus made the remarks during the opening of the first MTC mobile home in Divundu, Kavango East region, on Monday. “This shop is a testament to development and access as being continuous activities that this government is gradually prioritising together with different offices, ministries and agencies including our able partner of MTC, as the line ministry we are constantly engaging with our line companies who serve as a conduit between ourselves and the people of Namibia and the word of the day today is bringing services closer to the people,’’ she said.
The minister indicated that digital literacy could coexist alongside artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, machine learning, and quantum technology. “All of these things can work in parallel and can go linearly. We do this because we know that, as a government, there are some gaps we need to close. There are some areas where we make sure that communities, especially those in rural areas, reach a point where they are on par with urban areas,” emphasised Theofelus. Kavango East governor, Hamunyera Hambyuka, on behalf of the region, expressed deep appreciation to MTC Namibia for the timely investment, stating that for many years, residents of Mukwe constituency, students, small business owners, and ordinary community members had to travel long distances to Rundu just to access the mobile home for essential mobile and digital services. He said the new MTC Mobile Home is a symbol of the inclusion of the people of Divundu and the surrounding communities.
MTC’s general manager for product solutions, Andreas Gustav, while addressing the community, noted that for MTC, the new mobile home is more than bricks, shelves, and branding. It is a living representation of MTC’s trust in Divundu and their long-term commitment to the people of the Kavango East region.
“As this town grows, connecting Namibia to neighboring countries and benefiting from a booming tourism market, we want MTC to be right here with you, walking this journey together,’’ he said. Chairperson of Kavango East and councillor for Mukwe constituency, Damian Maghambayi, highlighted several network issues in his area during his speech, including the Kangongo network tower. He noted that it has taken an unusually long time to complete the tower. According to him, the contractor has reportedly abandoned the site and left workers unpaid.
“Our community is deeply concerned. This tower is critical for our communication needs, and we kindly request your intervention to ensure that the responsible contractor is held accountable and that this project is completed without further delay,” he said.
