Windhoek’s ‘Farm 508’ gets clinic

Africa-Press – Namibia. The Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Esperance Luvindao inaugurated the Farm 508 primary health care unit in the Samora Michel constituency on Wednesday.

Farm 508 is on the outskirts of Windhoek and consists of mainly residents who were relocated there from Otjomuise’s 8ste Laan informal settlement earlier this year after the flooding of their area.

Speaking during her keynote address, Luvindao said that the launch of the clinic affirms the Government’s commitment to bringing health services closer to the people.

“The Farm 508 Primary Health Care Outreach Point stands as a beacon of that commitment a facility born out of necessity, now serving as a pillar of resilience and care. This outreach point was established in response to the relocation of residents from Otjomuise following devastating flash floods,” she said. “What began as an emergency intervention has evolved into a structured, reliable access point for essential health services in the Goreangab area.

It is a reminder that even in moments of crisis, we can build systems that endure,” said Luvindao.

The minister emphasised the importance of primary health care as the backbone of Namibia’s health system, emphasising the need to construct more infrastructure.

“It is where prevention begins, where early detection saves lives, and where families receive the education and support, they need to thrive. If we are serious about improving health outcomes, we must continue to invest in infrastructure that brings these services to the doorstep of every Namibian,” she said.

Since July, the Khomas Health Directorate has been delivering services at Farm 508 three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. These include emergency treatment, screening, immunisation, family planning, wound care, and maternal health services.

In just three months, nearly 900 first-time outpatient visits were recorded, alongside immunisations, family planning consultations, and even an emergency delivery conducted on-site.

“We are not stopping here. As we continue to strengthen outreach services, we will work to ensure that a medical officer is available during clinic days, that the facility is expanded to accommodate more services, and that full electrification is achieved to support consistent care,” she said. The Khomas Regional Council has also installed a solar photovoltaic system, which ensures that services continue despite the absence of municipal electricity.

Speaking on behalf of the Farm 508 residents, Maria Haitengeneka, expressed her gratitude towards the government for opening the clinic. “Our councillor is the first one we have seen to walk by foot to come address us in a meeting here in Samora Michel constrinuency. He is also the first to bring us a Police Station and now he brought us this project of the clinic. We are thankful and grateful. We would like for him to continue leading us gracefully,” said Haitengeneka.

Over the past years, the Khomas Regional Council has implemented a variety of Minor Capital Projects across all constituencies of the Khomas region. These initiatives span several key sectors, including health, education, safety and security, among others. The projects entail the construction, upgrading, and renovation of various essential facilities, all aimed at strengthening service delivery and improving the quality of life for the residents.

The Khomas Regional Council will also inaugurate three ANS rooms at the Khomasdal Clinic on Monday, 24 November. This is part of the Khomas Regional Council’s two-day official inauguration ceremonies of various minor capital projects in collaboration with various line ministries.

The rest of the projects include three prefabricated offices at the Klein Windhoek Police Station, the rehabilitated netball court at A. Shipena Secondary School as well as a prefabricated Clinic at Mix Settlement in the Windhoek Rural constituency. These projects are set to be launched on Monday, 24 November.
