Africa-Press – Namibia. FNB Namibia says it is concerned about reports that some CashPlus agents are charging extra fees or setting conditions before allowing customers to withdraw or deposit cash. The bank said these practices are not allowed.
The bank said CashPlus was introduced to promote financial inclusion by bringing basic banking services closer to communities across Namibia, especially in areas with limited access to bank branches.
Through the service, customers can withdraw and deposit cash safely and conveniently within their communities.
FNB said the CashPlus model is designed to benefit both customers and agents. Agents receive a commission directly from the bank for every eligible transaction.
The service also brings more customers into agent stores, which can increase sales and create income opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
Because agents are already compensated through commissions, they may not charge customers any additional fees or impose conditions such as compulsory purchases.
Addressing the issue, Rivan Meyer, transact pillar head at FNB Namibia, said, “CashPlus was introduced to make everyday banking more accessible, affordable and dignified for all Namibians, while also empowering local entrepreneurs, particularly in communities with limited access to traditional banking services. When the solution is used as intended, it benefits both customers and agents and strengthens trust within the communities we serve.”
FNB said CashPlus agents play a key role in extending banking services into communities and are expected to operate transparently and fairly.
The bank said agents must process transactions without charging extra fees or attaching conditions to withdrawals and deposits.
To address the current challenges, FNB Namibia said it is engaging with CashPlus agents to reinforce awareness of the CashPlus Agreement and the purpose of the programme while providing guidance and support to ensure compliance.
“We encourage all CashPlus agents to familiarise themselves with both the requirements and the purpose of the CashPlus Agreement. By doing so, agents help ensure that CashPlus continues to deliver fair, accessible and trusted banking services that positively impact the communities they serve,” Meyer said.
